About TAP Portugal

TAP Portugal is a majority-owned Portuguese airline based in Lisbon and has its hub at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport and is a member of the Star Alliance airline alliance. If you have experienced a flight delay or cancellation with TAP Air Portugal, your rights are regulated in the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation. According to this, you may be entitled to compensation or ticket refund from TAP Air Portugal in the event of such a flight problem.

Thousands of flights have also been cancelled at TAP Portugal due to the consequences of the Corona pandemic. The good news for affected passengers: The provisions of the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation continue to apply. If a flight cannot be operated due to government travel restrictions and therefore has to be cancelled, the airline is obliged to refund the ticket costs to the passengers. Since in this case an extraordinary circumstance was the reason for the flight cancellation and the airline is not at fault, travelers cannot claim compensation.

Even in times of Corona, however, there are also numerous flight cancellations that are not directly attributable to the pandemic. Airlines keep cancelling connections that are underutilized. These are cancellations for so-called economic reasons. If the flight is cancelled for economic reasons, passengers may be entitled to compensation from the airline in addition to the reimbursement of ticket costs. If you want to find out whether and how much money you are entitled to for your problem flight with TAP Air Portugal, you can do so online for free in just a few steps. We will examine your claim and then take over the legal enforcement of your claim. If we are successful, you will receive your compensation or ticket refund minus a success commission (usually 20-30% plus VAT).

Flight problems with TAP Portugal: Your rights at a glance

Your TAP Air Portugal flight did not go as planned? Would you like to know what you are entitled to in individual cases and how you should behave? In our FAQ, we answer the most common questions about:

  • Flight delay: If your Ryanair flight arrives at your destination more than 3 hours later than expected.
  • Flight Cancellation: if you were not informed of the cancellation or informed less than 14 days before departure.
  • Overbooking: If you had suffered a denied boarding due to overbooking of your flight.
  • Missed connecting flight: If you missed a connecting flight due to a delay in one of the legs, and you arrived at your destination more than 3 hours later than expected.

What is the difference between compensation and ticket refund?

Since 2004, passengers have been protected in the event of flight irregularities by the EU Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004. Problems such as flight cancellations and delays regularly cause inconvenience to passengers. Therefore, if the airline caused the flight problem, affected travelers are entitled to compensation. Passengers are entitled to this so-called compensation payment in the event of delays of more than 3 hours, last-minute cancellations, overbooked flights and missed connecting flights. Compensation can be seen as a kind of compensation for passengers.

The ticket refund, on the other hand, is the refund of the ticket price to the passenger, as the airline has not provided its service. Travellers whose flight is cancelled without replacement and if the flight times are extremely different and they no longer want to travel at the new time are entitled to a ticket refund.

What am I entitled to if my flight is cancelled due to Corona?

If your flight with TAP Air Portugal is cancelled because it cannot be operated due to applicable Corona regulations, you are not entitled to compensation. However, the airline must reimburse you for the ticket costs within 7 days or, alternatively, enable alternative transport or rebooking to a later date. This is provided for in Article 8 of the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation. If you have used a replacement flight or accepted a rebooking, you are no longer entitled to a ticket refund for the cancelled flight.

When can I get compensation from TAP Air Portugal for a flight cancellation?

If the airline informs you of the cancellation of your flight less than 14 days before departure, you may be entitled to compensation. Whether you wanted to fly for private or business reasons, the flight was booked individually or as part of a package tour, does not play a role in your compensation claim. For the claim for compensation, it is also crucial that the reasons for the cancellation can be traced back to the airline. If a flight is cancelled for reasons beyond the airline’s control, e.g. severe weather, air traffic controllers’ strikes, airport and airspace closures or travel restrictions due to Corona, it does not have to pay compensation to passengers.

When can I get a ticket refund from TAP Air Portugal for a flight cancellation?

If your flight is cancelled without TAP Air Portugal at fault, you are not entitled to compensation under EU passenger law. However, you have the right to alternative transport to your destination or to be rebooked to a later date. If you do not wish to do this, or if there is no possibility of obtaining alternative transportation, TAP Air Portugal will have to refund you the original ticket price paid. By the way: The ticket price to be refunded includes the entire cost of the flight. So, if you paid extra money for seat reservations, baggage, or meals, the airline will have to pay you back that cost as well. TAP Air Portugal can also offer you a voucher as a refund. However, you can insist on the payment of the ticket costs. The airline must then comply with this request in a timely manner. Once you have accepted the voucher, you can no longer demand payment of the ticket price afterwards.

When can I claim compensation and a ticket refund in the event of a flight cancellation?

If the airline is responsible for the flight cancellation itself and has informed you of the cancellation less than 14 days before the scheduled departure and has not offered a replacement flight, you can claim both compensation and a ticket refund from the airline.

How much compensation can I get from TAP Air Portugal?

The amount of compensation is calculated according to the flight route. How much you paid for the flight is unimportant for the compensation amount.

  • Short-haul (less than 1,500 kilometres): You are entitled to compensation of €250 from TAP Air Portugal under EU law
  • Medium-haul flights (up to 3,500 kilometres): According to EU law, you are entitled to compensation of €400 from TAP Air Portugal
  • Long-haul flights (over 3,500 kilometres): You are entitled to compensation of €600 from TAP Air Portugal under EU law

Flight delay, cancellation, overbooking or missed connecting flight? This is what you are entitled to:

Short distance up to 1500 kmMedium distance up to 3500 kmLong distance from 3500 km
e.g. London – Edinburghe.g. London – Athense.g. London – Tokyo

*Less commission (usually 20 to 30% plus VAT)

How long can I claim compensation or a ticket refund for my flight?

You can claim compensation and ticket refund in UK up to 6 years after the flight. The deadline is calculated at the end of the year. So, for example, if you had a flight cancellation with TAP Air Portugal in the summer of 2024, you can file compensation claims and ticket refund claims until the end of 2030.

What rights do I have if my TAP Air Portugal flight is overbooked?

Unfortunately, it regularly happens that airlines overbook flights, i.e. sell more tickets than there are seats on board. In this way, airlines want to make the most of their flights. If you learn at the airport that your flight is overbooked and therefore you cannot fly as planned, you are entitled to an alternative flight or compensation or ticket refund. If you also have to wait a long time for the new flight, the airline is obliged to offer you so-called supply services at the airport according to the EU Passenger Rights Regulation. This includes the free supply of food and drinks as well as the provision of communication options, e.g. telephone calls and e-mails. Unfortunately, the low-cost airlines in particular often do not take this obligation seriously. Important: You are also entitled to care services at the airport even if your departure is severely delayed or the original flight is cancelled altogether and you have to wait several hours at the airport.

What am I entitled to if the departure is postponed to the next day?

If your flight has to be postponed to the next day at short notice, the airline is obliged to arrange accommodation for you. This means that the airline must arrange an overnight stay in a hotel and a return trip to the airport for you. In addition, it must bear the costs for this. It does not matter why the flight has been postponed to the next flight. The airline is obliged to take care of your accommodation. If the airline does not proactively contact you and offer accommodation, you should approach the TAP Air Portugal staff directly on site and insist on your rights. In the event that you have to organize the hotel rooms and transfer yourself, please clarify that the airline will cover the costs afterwards. It is best to have the confirmation given in writing.

What should I do if I have a flight problem with TAP Air Portugal?

If you are affected by a cancellation or long delay, ask the airline for written confirmation of the cause. If you find out at the airport that your flight has been delayed, cancelled or you have been the victim of overbooking, you should insist on the utilities to which you are entitled. You should also seek the help of air passenger rights experts. On your own, it is not only very often difficult to determine whether a compensation payment is possible under EU law. In addition, airlines also repeatedly try to block claims from passengers – even though the claims are justified. With air passenger rights portals, you can check online in just a few steps what you are entitled to for your problem flight and also commission the experts to enforce your claims. They then take over the entire dispute with the airline – you don’t have to do anything else.

When am I entitled to TAP Air Portugal strike compensation?

You are entitled to compensation due to a strike by TAP Air Portugal (TAP strike) if:

  • Your flight was delayed or cancelled due to a strike by TAP Air Portugal (TAP Strike).
  • Your TAP Air Portugal flight was delayed for either 3 hours or more, or was cancelled less than 14 days before your departure date.
  • You had a confirmed flight reservation from TAP Air Portugal.
  • The disruption of their flight by TAP Air Portugal occurred within the last 3 years.
  • You have taken an alternative flight and the new arrival time differed significantly from the arrival time of the original TAP Air Portugal flight.

What are the requirements for TAP Portugal Flight Delay or Cancellation Compensation?

If your TAP Portugal flight was delayed or cancelled, you might be able to claim compensation from the airline. However, there are certain conditions that must be met in order to receive compensation. For example, the delay or cancellation must be due to reasons for which TAP Portugal is responsible, such as technical problems or a strike. The flight must have taken off or landed within the EU. The delay must be at least 3 hours and passengers must be able to prove their identity and booking details. It should be noted that there are certain exceptions to these rules and that the airline always has the right to prove that the delay or cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances and therefore no compensation is due.

For example, if TAP Portugal’s outbound flight from Munich to Lisbon (LIS) was delayed or cancelled, you can contact the airline to find out if you can get compensation. It is also possible for TAP Portugal to offer top deals for a replacement flight. It is always advisable for air passengers to find out about their rights in the event of flight delays and cancellations and, if necessary, to take steps to obtain compensation. With Flightright, you can find out what you’re entitled to for your cancelled or delayed flight in just a few minutes.
