Stornoway Airport is an outstanding and expansive airfield located about 4 kilometres east of Stornoway Town on the famous Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It is owned by Highlands & Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), an airline company managed by the Scottish Government.
The airport has a spacious parking space with marked pick-up and drop-off areas, a convenience store, and a café offering a wide range snacks and light meals accompanied with cold and hot drinks, a shop selling books, daily and weekly newspapers, and toiletries, baby changing facilities, a post box, pay phones, and a flat screen television showing national and international channels. The disabled are also catered for adequately as they are provided with disabled parking bays, disabled toilets, ramp facilities, and wheelchairs.
Security at all Highlands; Islands Airports are controlled and managed by AMSL (Airport Management Services Limited). The management has highly-trained and professional security personnel working 24 hours a day to ensure all passengers arriving at or leaving the airport are safe at all times. Before entering or leaving the airport, all passengers are provided with a set of rules and regulations which they have to follow to avoid unnecessary conflicts with the security personnel.

To avoid missing a flight, all passengers are expected to check in an hour earlier before the scheduled departing time in order to get enough time to pass through all the security processes. Car and van hire services offered by the airport are very comfortable and affordable. Visitors are allowed to book in advance of arrival. For effectiveness and quick service, the car hire booking area is located within the airport's terminal, not far away from the carousel.

According to the UK Annual Airport Statistics, the airport serves more than 105,000 national and international passengers every year. All the airlines in this airport operate within 7 countries including France, Germany, United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Norway, Belgium, and Netherlands. Some also fly to the United States. Statistics coming from the Stornoway Tourist Board reveal that more than half of the airport destinations served by the different airlines are in the United Kingdom, standing at 73%.

Stornoway Airport is served by just 2 airlines: Flybe and Eastern Airways. Flybe offers flights to Benbecula, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Eastern Airways currently only operates one flight, to the city of Aberdeen.

Airport History

The airport was first opened in the year 1937 to serve as Stornoway's aerodrome. It was later taken under military control in the year 1941 during World War II. Between 1986 and 1993, the airport served as a NATO Forward Operating Base for Air Defence and was used for various missions over the North Atlantic region and for stop overs to the United States of America and Greenland. Currently, it operates as a domestic passenger airport, used by different European airlines transporting travellers and visitors to and from Scotland and Greenland. It is also used by the Royal Navy three times a year for joint Maritime Courses.

Late Departures - What can I do about Delays?

Flights at the airport are considered delayed if they arrive or depart more than 3 hours after the scheduled or programmed departure/arrival time. Over the past few years, the airport has continued to maintain a clean record of early departure and arrival. However, in the past few months, some airlines have been departing and arriving late at the airport due to bad weather conditions. This has led to about 20% of departures and 10% of arrivals being late since late March, with the largest numbers of delays occurring in the afternoons and evenings.
