Jersey Airport (JER) serves the Channel Island of Jersey and is located on the west side of the island just five miles from the capital of St Helier. This is the main gateway to the island of Jersey and the airport provides an important connection for tourists and business travellers who want to travel to and from the mainland quickly and conveniently. The airport processes around 1.5 million passengers a year with 61,000 aircraft movements and features a single runway measuring 1,706 metres long.
The airport features a single terminal building with just one level, which makes it exceptionally easy for passengers to find their way around. Most of the facilities and services are located close to each other, while there are also plenty of clearly marked signs to lead the way to different areas such as the check-in desks and gates.

People who are waiting for their flight to depart and are travelling with children will be able to make use of the special children’s play area and fun zone. Private baby changing facilities are also available, while business services can be found in both of the airport’s two VIP lounges. The airport also offers a wide range of restaurants, bars and cafes along with excellent shopping outlets.

Jersey Airport is served various major airlines including Air Berlin, Blue Islands, CityJet, easyJet and Flybe. Other airlines operate flights from the airport on a seasonal basis. These air carriers provide direct connections to a large number of prominent cities in the United Kingdom and Europe such as London City, Guernsey, Amsterdam, Geneva and Paris. The most popular destination from Jersey Airport is London, with more than half a million people choosing to take a direct flight to London Gatwick International Airport each year.

Jersey Airport's Short History

Although the popularity of flights to and from Jersey Airport have been declining slightly in recent years, Jersey is becoming increasingly more popular as a tourist destination among holidaymakers who want to stay closer to home during their summer break and it is expected that the number of passengers passing through the airport will increase in the years to come.

Jersey Airport was established on March 10, 1937 in order to provide a convenient connection between the island of Jersey and mainland UK. Although a small number of biplanes and other aircrafts had been touching down on the island before this time, the risk of people accidentally stumbling into their landing path was too high and it was decided that an official landing area complete with runways was needed. The design of the airport also included a special control tower bearing the Jersey coat of arms.
When the airport was originally opened it featured four grass runways, with the longest being 896 metres and featuring a concrete centreline. In 1952 these runways were closed when a single tarmac runway measuring 1,280 metres was added. This runway has been lengthened several times of the years with the last time being in 1976. Additional taxiways have also been added to help deal with the increasing number of planes that depart from Jersey Airport each week.
However, the runway is still deemed as being insufficient by some airlines and attempts are currently being made to obtain permission to extend it. A new terminal building is also being constructed to replace the 1937 building and is set to contain a wide range of new facilities and amenities.
