Your plane may be delayed: How good is Newcastle Airport?

Newcastle Airport is a major regional transport hub in the North of England. It serves the communities of the North East of England and Cumbria, as well as South Scotland and North Yorkshire. From 1978, it has been known as Newcastle International Airport, taking passengers on both short-haul and long-haul flights direct to 74 destinations. 4.5 million passengers fly from its Terminal each year and it employs 3,200 people on site, with a further 4,600 across the region. It contributes £646 million into the regional economy annually.

16 scheduled airlines fly from the airport, including British AirwayseasyJetFlybeJet2, Lufthansa and Ryanair. It has a daily direct flight to Dubai, with transfers to long-haul destinations available and it also has many short-haul flights for budget airlines.

History and Development

Newcastle Airport’s beginnings were somewhat more humble. It originally had a simple grass runway with oil drums that could be lit to function as runway lights. Over the decades, the site has been improved and developed, with expanded provision for retail and hospitality outlets. The footprint of the site has been increased, enabling more passengers to use the terminal facilities comfortably. Space has been increased for screening of passengers and up-to-date technology utilised. In 1991 the Metro system was extended to link Newcastle International Airport to the city and beyond, dramatically improving access to the airport.

Examining the Data on Delays

The statistics for flight delay times at the airport have been seen to improve in the past five years. In 2007 the average delay time was 14.13 minutes, and in 2013 it was down to 10.36. This change could, however, be somewhat due to the decrease in flights from the airport. In 2007, over 48,000 flights were recorded, which was 20 – 30% more than 2013. This decrease in flights is a result of the recent major recession that hit the airline industry particular badly. In 2013 the airport ranked as the sixth best across the UK in terms of schedule delays.
Of course, there are variations between airlines as well as airports in terms of delays. According to the most recent data, the best performer airlines are KLM and easyJet, with average delays of 5.36 and 7.25 respectively. One of the worst performers was British Airways, whose average delay was 13.89 minutes on almost 4000 flights.

Can you claim compensation for flight delays?
